Princeton library sponsors tsunami program Thursday

Princeton Public Library will present the community information program "Tsunami Disaster: Causes and Responses" 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
John Suppe, professor of geology and structural geology at Princeton University, will examine the causes of the tsunami that struck Southeast Asia last month. The professor, a Guggenheim fellow, will explain how such a devastating event can occur and what the world can do in the aftermath.
A representative from Doctors Without Borders has also been invited to discuss the tsunami’s effects across the globe.
The presentation follows a tsunami relief drive held at the library on Jan. 15, when volunteers from the library’s Teen Advisory Board raised more than $300. The teens will again be on hand to collect donations before and after the presentation.
"We hope this program will help the community understand how such a devastating event could occur and how the world can best respond to disasters of such unthinkable proportion," said Susan Roth, readers services coordinator, who oversees the library’s programming. "We feel very fortunate to be able to bring Professor Suppe to the library to share his expertise with the community."
Princeton Public Library is located at 65 Witherspoon St., Princeton Borough. Special assistance is available for library customers with disabilities. Those with special needs should contact the library 48 hours before any program to arrange for accommodations. Call (609) 924-9529.
