Helen Hammarstrom
Helen R. Leigh Hammarstrom, 89, died Jan. 17 in Waterville, Maine.
She was a lifelong resident of the Trenton area until her move to Maine in August 2003. She was employed for many years by the state and worked at the West Trenton State Police Headquarters at the time of her retirement in 1979.
She was a former member of the Prospect Street Presbyterian Church where she was a charter member of the John Rich Memorial Hand Bell Choir. At the time of her death she was a member of West Trenton Presbyterian Church. She served for many years as a volunteer for the Ewing Meals on Wheels program.
She also was an active member of the ECHO senior citizens program.
Daughter of the late Frank C. and Maude B. Rockey, wife of the late Samuel W. Leigh, who died in 1970, and of C. Joseph Hammarstrom, who died in 1992.
She is survived by her two sons and their wives, David W. and Ann D. Leigh of Belgrade, Maine, and Roger A and Desiree Leigh of Lawrenceville; five grandchildren, Capt. Samuel Carson Leigh (USMC) of Encinitas, Calif., Jennifer Leigh Dominello and her husband, Sal, of Cheshire, Conn., Andrew D. Leigh of Portland, Maine, Caroline C. Leigh of Lawrenceville and Philip J. Leigh of Austin, Texas; and one great-grandson, Jack Thomas Dominello; a sister-in-law, Irene Hammarstrom of Shrewsbury, Mass., as well as numerous nieces and nephews in the Leigh family who also survive her.
Funeral services were held Jan. 22, at the West Trenton Presbyterian Church.
Burial was in the Kingston Presbyterian Cemetery, Kingston.
The family request donations to the West Trenton Presbyterian Church, 490 Grand Ave., West Trenton, NJ, or to the Mercer Street Friends, 151 Mercer Street, Trenton, NJ.
Arrangements were by Wilson-Apple Funeral Home, Pennington.
Mable Monroe
Mable Monroe, 73, died Jan. 15 at Capital Health System at Mercer Campus.
She was born Jan. 17, 1931, and educated in Memphis. She later moved to Trenton where she became a resident of 45 years.
Predeceased by her father B.E. Griffin, she is survived by seven daughters, Terry, Deborah, and Patricia Monroe (Luxton Patrick) all of Ewing, Renee Smith (Edward Vernon), Lynette Monroe-Thomas (James), Stacy Monroe (Michael Derry) all of Trenton, and Gina Alvarez-Lawry of Lawrenceville; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; mother, Willie Lee Underwood of Memphis; one sister, Ruth Baker of Memphis; two godchildren, Sherrie Dupree of Atlantic City and Eugene Payne of Trenton; one godsister, Aileen Harris of Trenton; godmother Ruth Slaughter of Trenton; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Jan. 20 at Union Baptist Church, 311 Pennington Ave., Trenton.
Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery, Hamilton Township.
Arrangements were by Anderson Funeral Service.
Samuel Petranto
Samuel Petranto, 87, died Jan. 18 at Capital Health Systems at Fuld.
Born in Yatesboro, Pa., he resided in the Trenton area for most of his life.
He was a barber, former owner of Style Beauty Supply Company in Trenton, and manager of Fountain Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Ewing.
Son of the late Rosario and Maria Zingarella Petranto, husband of the late Blanche Femiano Petranto, brother of the late Michael, Charles, and Louis Petranto, uncle of the late Dr. Russell Petranto; he is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Marie and Lorey Santin of Lawrenceville, and Adelina Paternoster of Huntington Beach, Calif.; one brother, Dr. Joseph Petranto of Lakehurst; one sister, Susan Allegretti of Whiting; five grandchildren, Christopher and his wife Sue Santin of Lawrenceville, Michael Santin of Titusville, Laura and her husband John Rivera of Huntington Beach, Calif., Elissa and her husband Mark Griffith of San Diego, Jennifer and her husband Rob Durazzo of Huntington Beach, Calif.; two nephews, Russell Petranto of Los Angeles, and Edward and his wife Angela Petranto of Bordentown Township; one niece, Sabrina and her husband Al Barbieri of Hamilton Township; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-nieces; three great-nephews; eight great-great-nephews; and one great-great-niece.
Services were Friday from the Parkside Brenna-Cellini Funeral Home, 1584 Parkside Ave., Ewing.
Burial was private in Fountain Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Sarah Polinsky
Sarah Polinsky, 90, died Jan. 20 at Compassionate Care Hospice, Trenton.
Born in Boston, Mass., she was a former resident of Brockton, Mass., Boynton Beach, Fla., and Forked River before moving to Lawrenceville.
She was a member of the Kosher Cafe in Ewing Township.
Wife of the late Samuel Polinsky, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Clark Chalifour of Forked River; a granddaughter and her husband, Lisa and Ken Webber of Lawrenceville; and four great-grandchildren, Allison, David, Melanie and Sara Webber.
Funeral services and burial were private.

Thomas Qualey
Thomas F. Qualey, 84, died Jan. 18 at the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg, Pa.
Born in Brooklyn, New York City, he was a Trenton resident for 10 years moving to Lawrence Township in 1957 and later moving to Effort, Pa., in 2004.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II who served in the European Theatre in the Rome-Arno, Sicily and Tunisia battle campaigns.
He retired as sales manager in 1983 after 31 years service with the Sears, Roebuck and Co. store in the Quaker Bridge Mall.
Son of the late Thomas J. and Helen Broderick Qualey, husband of the late Mildred C. Maione Qualey and Jean E. Stannard Qualey, brother of the late Robert E. Qualey, he is survived by his close friends, Barbara and Lawrence Ventre Sr. and their son, Larry and his wife Natalie Ventre, all of Effort, Pa.; and other friends.
Services were Friday at the Winowicz Funeral Chapel, 865 Brunswick Ave., with Father Stanislaus Polczyk officiating.
Burial was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery.

Edward Barry Jr.
Edward J. Barry Jr., 86, died Saturday in Princeton University Medical Center.
He was born April 10, 1919, in Trenton, grew up on Rosemont Avenue, and lived in Lawrence Township since 1948.
He was a veteran of World War II. As a captain, he commanded the 31st Ordinance Bomb Disposal Squad that saw action in England, Omaha Beach in Normandy, and supported the 1st and 3rd Armies’ campaign through central France, Belgium, and southern Germany, ending at the Fulda Gap on VE Day.
In his youth, he ran a paper route and enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing with his father, City of Trenton Police Capt. Edward Barry, and other companions. He was also active in the Boy Scouts of America and formed one of that organization’s first Explorer Posts, keeping members connected during college years with a letter that each would add to and pass on to the next in the list.
In 1940, he graduated from Rutgers University with a bachelor’s of science in agriculture. Following the war and after 30 years employment, he retired from the Farmer’s Cooperative Association, later Agway, where he purchased and sold agricultural commodities. He embarked on a second career with the state Purchasing Division where his expert knowledge in things agricultural and his ability to actively listen to his customers was held in high regard and produced superlative results.
He was active in the community, a member of and past commander of American Legion Post 414, an officer of the Reardon Rod and Gun Club, a member of the St. Anne’s Holy Name Society, a member of the local Boy Scout Troop Committee and an active league bowler.
Predeceased by four wives, Katherine Hendershott, Helen Crush, Sarah Cavanaugh, and Margaret Bentivogli.
Surviving are a brother, Jack Barry; a sister, Sister Mary Edwarda; seven sons and spouses, Edward and Anne, William and Lyn, Thomas and Joann, Michael and Jasmin, Robert and Sheila, Reginald and Vivian Bentivogli, and Ronald and Bunny Bentivogli; 12 grandchildren, Matthew, Scott, Jason, Max, David, Kevin, Kelly, Mark, Steven, Brian, Shannon, and Kevin; one niece, Keelin and Bruce Dorpalin; two nephews, Sean and Barbara Barry and Christopher Barry; and grandniece and nephew Galen and Liam Dorpalin.
Mass will be 11 a.m. today (Thursday) in St. Ann’s Church, Lawrence Road.
Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery immediately following the mass.
