JAMESBURG — Got a strong back?
If so, the borough could use you.
Zoning Officer Bernie Long said Wednesday that the 16 inches of snow that blanketed the borough last weekend has revived the perennial need for volunteer snow shovelers to help elderly, sick and handicapped residents clear snow from the sidewalks in front of their homes.
Borough ordinance requires residents to remove snow from their sidewalks within 48 hours after a storm, Mr. Long said. Violators can be fined $25.
But the borough keeps a list of volunteers to help those who are "legitimately unable" to clear the snow themselves, Mr. Long said. He said he had handed out notices explaining the ordinance and directing people to call for help around the borough on Wednesday.
"I want people to call if they need help and I want people to call if they want to help," Mr. Long said.
Residents from both categories should call Mr. Long throughout the winter at Borough Hall, (732) 521-2222, ext. 105.
