A member of the Princeton High School boys’ basketball team was charged with making terrorist threats after a game against Princeton Day School on Tuesday.
Police said the boy, 16, who is a Princeton Township resident, threatened a PDS basketball player during and after the game, which was held at Princeton High School.
He also attempted to start a fight after the game, police said.
In the parking lot next to PHS after the game, the juvenile flashed gang hand signs and made comments that he was a member of the Blood street gang, police said.
Lt. Dennis McManimon said since the incident involved juveniles, he couldn’t release details of the specific threats the PHS player made against the PDS student.
A representative of PDS notified PHS, which immediately contacted the borough police, Lt. McManimon said.
"PDS took it seriously and the high school did, too," he said.
The juvenile was taken to the Mercer County Youth Detention Center in Ewing, police said.
"We are no longer going to tolerate this behavior," Lt. McManimon said. "If kids are going to act like they’re in a gang, then we’re going to treat them like they’re in a gang. There is zero tolerance."
Police, school and community officials have expressed concern about several incidents involving Princeton teenagers that have involved ties to violent street gangs over the past several months.
