Workshop to focus on youth obesity

MANALAPAN — A free health workshop, Fit for Life, will be held to deal with the affects of obesity.

The workshop is sponsored by the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District Board of Education and will be held at the Manalapan Englishtown Middle School, Millhurst Road, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m.

“The global obesity epidemic is affecting the present and future health of our children,” said Roberta Portilla, who is the nurse at MEMS. “We want to give parents strategies to promote a healthier lifestyle for their kids through nutrition and exercise.”

The workshop, which is open to parents in the community, will feature Portilla and Pine Brook School nurse Diane Elko.

The evening will focus on the obesity epidemic, nationwide and worldwide statistics, and health consequences for children. It is expected that the workshop will also focus on causes and how to reduce risk factors, and will give strategies for healthier eating, good nutrition and increasing physical activity.

The snow date is March 3 at 7:30 p.m.
