Duck stamp art contest open to grades K-12

The Wetlands Institute, Stone Harbor, is the official receiving site for entries from all over New Jersey for the 2005 Federal Junior Duck Stamp Competition.

The Junior Duck Stamp Program was developed to teach students more about environmental science and habitat conservation. Participants select a species of North American waterfowl, do research on the species and the habitat, and then depict the waterfowl in an artistic medium.

Students from kindergarten through 12th grade compete in four age-group levels and one “Best of Show in New Jersey.” The “Best of Show” entry will be sent to the National Junior Duck Stamp Competition in Washington, D.C., in April. The winning national entry will be used for the 2005 Federal Junior Duck Stamp, and the artist will receive $5,000 cash and a free trip to Washington to attend the First Day of Sales ceremony.

The judging of entries from New Jersey will take place March 28 at the Wetlands Institute, and the 36 top winning entries will be on display there during April.

For more information on rules, format and entry procedures, visit http://duckstamp.fws.gov or call the Wetlands Institute, (609) 368-1211. The deadline for entries is March 15. All entries must be mailed to the Wetlands Institute, 1075 Stone Harbor Blvd., Stone Harbor 08247.
