The South Hunterdon youth wrestling team traveled to Montgomery Feb. 3 to face the Montgomery Cougars.
Coach Glenn Case’s South team posted wins and wrestled well despite half the team, including Tyler Frazee, Rhett Warner, Mark Leary, Colin Leary and Yiorges Georgeson, staying home due to illness.
Second-year wrestler Hannah Word posted her first pin in the second period of her only match. Word kept on top of her opponent through the first period and then turned him over for the pin early in the second period. Word continues to show concentration and improvement with each match, her coach said.
Kyle Herron, a fourth-year wrestler, had two losses on points. In the first match, Herron lost 8-6 with Montgomery scoring two in the waning seconds of the third period. The second match was a tough one with Montgomery dominating the match for another loss on points.
Herron stays with his opponents and works hard, Case said.
Brittany Reed, in her first year, was matched up against an opponent with more experience and more weight and was pinned early in the first period. Reed hangs tough, Case said.
Fifth-year wrestlers Brandon Neborsky and Jack Immordino faced seasoned opponents and split their matches with Neborsky posting one win and one loss while Immordino scored two wins and one loss.
Neborsky, 11, faced a 14-year-old in his first match. Neborsky struggled against the older boy and was pinned early in the third period. Neborsky came back strong in his second match and reversed the decision, picking up a pin over another older opponent.
Immordino won two matches on points, riding out the clock to take one of the matches with a 5-4 decision. In his first match of the evening, Immordino could not get out of the half-nelson and was pinned in the second period.
South youth wrestlers will participate in the Hopewell Tournament Feb. 13 at Timberlane Middle School in Hopewell. The tournament caps the Mercer County Youth Wrestling League season.
