Historical Society slates Feb. 27 session.
While the troops were off fighting during the Civil War, what was happening back in New Jersey? The generally held view was that the state was pro-southern before the war and even antiwar during it.
Hopewell Valley Historical Society’s guest speaker, William Gillette, professor of history at Rutgers University, will rebut this view on Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. in Morrell Hall of the Pennington United Methodist Church, 60 S. Main St., Pennington.
Dr. Gillette, author of "Jersey Blue, Civil War Politics in New Jersey, 1854-1865," will discuss "The Role of New Jersey in the Civil War." His emphasis will be on the political activities in the state at that time.
The program is offered through the Horizon Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities and is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
