William R. (Bill) Schmidt
   William R. (Bill) Schmidt, 68, of Pennington died Feb. 16.
   Born in Oshkosh, Wis., he lived in Chicago, Ill., Newark, New York City and East Hampton, N.Y., before moving to Pennington in 1976.
   He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in metropolitan and regional planning from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1957 and a master’s degrees in public administration from Harvard University in 1961.
   Mr. Schmidt began his career as a city planner with the Chicago Regional Office of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Subsequently, he was an urban renewal planner and policy analyst with the consulting firm of Candeub, Fleissig and Associates in Newark; director of planning for the Plainfield Community Development Agency; resident analyst in New York City for a welfare and work research project with Auerbach Associates of Philadelphia; a budget analyst and director of program analysis with the New Jersey Legislative Office of Fiscal Affairs; director of program analysis with the New York City Legislative Office of Budget Review; assistant executive director of the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Agency, where he administered the first gubernatorial primary public financing program in 1981, and fiscal analyst with the New Jersey Legislature’s Office of Legislative Services from which he retired in 1998.
   In Wisconsin, Mr. Schmidt was a member of the Youth and Young Adult boards of the Wisconsin Governor’s Commission on Human Rights, was inducted into the Iron Cross Society at the university and received the King Christian X Inter-fellowship Award in 1957. He was president of Theta Chi Fraternity. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1967.
   He served on the Board of Trustees of the Friends of the New Jersey State Museum, as chairman of the Pennington Historic Sites Committee, and as secretary and president of the Hopewell Valley Historical Society. An active member of St. James Catholic Church in Pennington, he served on the Adult Enrichment Committee, the Liturgy Team, the Re-Membering team, and as a lector.
   The son of the late Hugo Walter and Gertrude Arts Schmidt, and uncle of the late Andrea Louise Schmidt, he is survived by an older brother, George of Cottage Grove, Wis.; a niece and her children, Martha Larson and Michael and Krystal Larson of Bella Vista, Ark.; a nephew, William R. Schmidt, his wife Trisha, and their children Seth and Sha-Lynn of Poway, Calif.; and many cousins.
   Mr. Schmidt donated his body to the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Anatomical Association.
   Burial will be at the Peace Lutheran Cemetery in Oshkosh, Wis., at the convenience of family and friends.
   A Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m. March 12, at St. James Catholic Church, 115 E. Delaware Ave., Pennington.

Martha L. Powell
   Martha L. Powell, 98, died Saturday, at the Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Francis Medical Center, Trenton.
   Born in Lambertville, Mrs. Powell was a Titusville resident for 55 years.
   She was an assembler with the Durable Stainless Flatware Co. in Lambertville before retiring many years ago.
   With her late husband, John F. Powell, she was active in boy scouting in Titusville.
   Wife of the late John Francis Powell, and daughter of the late Thomas A. and Elvina Ditmar Lovett, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, George R. and Barbara F. Powell of Titusville; a grandson, Bryon F. Powell of Arlington, Va.; and a granddaughter, Gretchen R. Powell of Titusville.
   Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Van Horn-McDonough Funeral Home, 21 York Street, Lambertville. The Rev. Linda Hale of the Titusville United Methodist Church will officiate.
   Interment will follow at the Holcombe-Riverview Cemetery, Delaware Township.

Anthony P. Povia
   Anthony P. Povia, 75, died Feb. 16 at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia.
   Born and raised in Trenton, he was a resident of Hopewell Township for the past 50 years.
   A retiree from General Motors Fisher Body Division in West Trenton, he previously owned and operated a service station in Chambersburg for many years. He was a member of the Yardley Country Club for over 40 years. In his youth he played basketball and football for Trenton High, and also played for the local Santuzza Oilers football team. More recently, he was an active member of the PEAC fitness center. He also was a member of the Junior 4 Alumni Association and the Trenton High School 1948 Reunion Committee.
   Son of the late William and Edith Sheetz Povia and brother of the late William, he is survived by his wife, Philomena Radice Povia; three daughters and sons-in-law; Sharon and Robert Di Falco, Edith and Vincent Scannella Jr., and Jo Ann Povia; two grandsons, Vincent and Andrew Scannella, all of Pennington; a sister-in-law, Nora Povia of Hamilton; four nephews and their spouses, William and Belinda Povia of Hamilton, Donald and Donna Povia of Hamilton, Lawrence and Tommi Povia of Columbus, Daniel and Lori Povia of North Carolina, Diane and Charles Pluta of South Carolina; 15 grandnieces and grandnephews and one great-grandniece; and his late brother-in-law’s wife, Joan Radice.
   A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Catholic Church, 115 E. Delaware Ave., Pennington.
   Burial will be in Harbourton Cemetery, Harbourton.
   Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. today (Monday) at the Wilson-Apple Funeral Home, Pennington Circle.
