Marlboro Nick Pellegrino, a fifth-year senior, helped the Monmouth University men’s track and field team win its first-ever Northeast Conference Indoor Track and Field Champion in Landover, Md., in the Prince George’s Sports and Leisure Complex. The Hawks rolled up 136 points, topping runner-up Long Island University (120) by 16 points.

Pellegrino finished second in the 5,000-meter run (14:47.83) and sixth in the 3,000 (8:38.36). His second place was the best finish among the Hawk distance runners. He is a graduate of Marlboro High School.

Sophomore David Gaines, a Colts Neck graduate, was eighth in the 800 meters.

Hawks’ head coach, Joe Campagni, was named the NEC Coach of the Year.

The Manalapan Bombers, an A Division 10-year-old travel/tournament baseball team, is looking to add a player to their roster. The player must be 10-years-old by Aug. 1, 2005, and must be able to play the outfield. Freehold Township Parks and Recreation is holding open registrations for it Girls Softball and In-Line Hockey leagues in the Activity Center at Michael J. Tighe Park, Georgia Rd. The registrations will be held on Friday from 7-9 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. For this special registration, checks only will be accepted.

The Northwestern Monmouth Senior Softball Program is looking for additional players for the 2005 season that will begin on April 17. The league is open to players 55 and over. Games are played Saturday mornings at the Union Hill Park ballfields, one-mile east of Route 9. The Sunrise Optimist Club of Freehold, will be holding its Hot Shots Basketball Tournament on Sunday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at the YMCA of Western Monmouth County on East Freehold Road, Freehold Township. The tournament is for boys and girls in grades four through nine. A $5 entrance fee for each participant is required, and all participants will receive a free T-shirt. The Monmouth Council Boy Scouts of America (MCBSA) is proud to announce the First Recreational League for Soccer and Scouting — open to boys and girls ages 6-10.
