Lakewood taxpayers can receive free income tax assistance at the Lakewood municipal building.
The program is conducted by Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteers for low and moderated income taxpayers with a focus on seniors seeking an alternative to professional assistance.
In addition to help in preparing federal and state income tax forms, assistance in preparing New Jersey Property Tax Reimbursement (PTR) applications will be available.
One-on-one sessions will be conducted Mondays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lakewood municipal building, 231 Third St. Appointments may be scheduled by calling the township manager’s office at (732) 364-2500, ext. 5408.
All tax filers and PTR applicants must bring prior year tax returns, applications and other appropriate documentation to receive assistance. Call for details on the required documentation.
VITA volunteers receive training from the Internal Revenue Service in current tax code and related tax preparation matters. Volunteers concentrate on serving those with basic returns as opposed to the more complicated forms and returns that frequently require preparation by paid professionals.
