Area students learned the significance behind the March adage of "in like a lion, out like a lamb" this week following the first snowstorm of the month.
Students of the East Windsor Regional School District enjoyed a snow day on Tuesday, following a Monday storm that dumped 6.5 inches of snow in Hightstown, according to the National Weather Service. Accumulation totals were not available for East Windsor.
No major incidents happened in East Windsor as a result of the snowstorm, but Mayor Janice Mironov said the repeated pummelings of snow were "busting our budget."
The two snowstorms in the last week "significantly depleted our resources," the mayor said, and the Township Council might discuss purchasing new supplies at its March 8 meeting.
Mayor Mironov said she did not have an estimate as to how much the cleanup had cost, but a previous storm on Jan. 23 cost about $40,000.
"These two storms (in the past week) weren’t as significant as the first one," she said. "We put out as many people as we can so we can (get back to normal) as quickly and efficiently as possible."
Many of those Public Works officials put in overtime, the mayor said, which puts an even bigger dent in the budget.
Mayor Mironov said she thinks the township is prepared to deal with another snowstorm.
"We’re prepared to do what we need to do," she said.
In Hightstown, Hightstown Public Works/Water Superintendent Larry Blake said the snow hasn’t been a problem for his crew.
"It was just a little-bitty snowstorm," Mr. Blake said Wednesday. "It wasn’t much of a storm."
In preparation for the storm, Mr. Blake said crews began salting area roadways and sidewalks before the snow started falling Monday afternoon.
Mr. Blake said four trucks began plowing borough roads at 6 a.m. Tuesday morning while a front-end loader cleared out municipal parking lots.
The cleanup was completed by noon Tuesday, Mr. Blake said.
