ABERDEEN — Following a struggle, two men were shot at the Ken Gardens apartment complex last Tuesday night.
Police said around 10:30 p.m., Joseph Kungel, 24, called local authorities to North Concourse, where he lives. He said that he had gone to the apartment complex, located on Matawan Avenue, to visit a relative when a man yelled at him and then approached him and tried to rob him, according to Deputy Chief John Powers.
“A struggle ensued and the gun then discharged twice,” Powers said.
Kungel came away with a grazing wound to his abdominal area and one to his shoulder as well. He told police he eventually pulled a .38-caliber revolver away from the other man and called police.
He was treated at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel, and released.
Later in the evening, state police stopped a car heading southbound on the Garden State Parkway near mile marker 94. Shane Johnson, 26, the man who police said struggled with Kungel, was found inside with a gunshot wound to the leg. The automobile he was traveling in was stopped due to a speeding violation.
Johnson was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune, for treatment. He was later placed in custody and taken to Ocean County jail, Toms River, on unrelated probation warrants.
Powers said that he was not sure if there was any sort of previous relationship between the two men, and that his office is still investigating the matter. Charges have not been filed as of yet.
