Broadway version of classic drama presented

Hillsborough High School’s production of the award-winning Elton John and Tim Rice Broadway musical "Aida" opens Friday at the school auditorium.
The show, which recently concluded a four-year run on Broadway, is a love story set against the backdrop of war being fought between ancient Egypt and its neighbor Nubia. The show’s lavish costumes and sets, along with its large choral numbers make it a challenge.
"It is the most adventurous show we have ever tackled," said John Leahy, producer and musical director. "It is the first time for all of us to be doing this show, so it has been exciting for all involved cast, crew, staff and musicians."
Approximately 50 students are lending their talent to the production, either on stage, in the pit, or behind the scenes.
Junior Elisa Baricelli has the leading role of the enslaved princess, Aida. Senior Gavin Johnson plays Radames, the soldier who falls in love with Aida, and sophomore Laura Palantone plays Radames’s betrothed, Amneris.
The music, ranging from rock to reggae to East Indian dance, tells the classic tale of love between a soldier and an enslaved princess that transcends the gulf between two warring nations. Matched with the vibrantly colored costumes and set, the music brings the story to life.
"The music is really fun, it changes a lot and the huge choral numbers are really exciting," said senior Megan Suozzo, production assistant and pianist. "Everything is very intense, from the costumes to the musical numbers."
The timeless tale is suitable for all ages, according to Megan.
"Because it is a Disney musical, it’s definitely a family show," Megan said.
The production was realized by a team that includes Mr. Leahy, director; Chris Schraufnagel, choreographer; costume director Ed Porowski; and set and lighting designer Jim Leahy. Two Hillsborough High School alumni also joined the production staff this year: Jen Wu is stage manager and Tim Roche is technical director.
Tickets can be purchased between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. in the high school choir room for $10. Remaining tickets will be available at the door Friday. For more information, call John Leahy at (908) 874-0147.
