SOUTH BRUNSWICK — A truck crash shut down Route 1 for almost two hours last week.
The crash occurred around 5 a.m. last Thursday near Promenade Boulevard on the northbound lane of Route 1.
The driver of the Mack dump truck, Burt Kennedy, 64, of Atco, told investigators that another vehicle had cut him off, causing him to swerve and crash into the highway’s center divider.
The impact of the crash, according to South Brunswick Police Detective James Stoddard, sheared the truck’s gas tanks and leaked 100 gallons of diesel fuel onto the roadway.
The accident did not spark a fire and the driver was not injured, according to Stoddard.
Officials from the state Department of Transportation, however, worked until noon to clean up the fuel. The amount of fuel spilled, Stoddard said, could have posed a problem if it had leaked into roadway sewer system and aquifer.
The accident remains under investigation, according to Stoddard. No summonses have been issued.
