SOUTH BRUNSWICK — The township is in the process of reviewing its preliminary traffic code.

The traffic code must be first approved by the state Department of Transportation (DOT). Several conditions must be met before the DOT approves South Brunswick’s code, including:

• A 4-ton truck weight ban on Georges Road from Route 130 in Dayton to Deans Rhode Hall Road.

• A four-way stop sign at Davidson’s Mill Road and Friendship Road.

• A speed reduction on Henderson Road from 40 mph to 35 mph is also being considered.

The council also passed a resolution authorizing a grant application submission to the DOT for roadway improvements along Route 1. The grant money would be used for improvements to curbing and drainage on Ridge Road, between Route 522 and Georges Road.

It also includes pedestrian improvements on Finnegans Lane for sidewalk construction near the Brunswick Acres Development and bikeway improvements on Beekman Road to extend between Veterans Park and Beechwood Park.

Mayor Frank Gambatese said he was hopeful that the town will receive all of the aid requested for the improvements.

In addition, the township drafted a resolution requesting a safe corridor designation for Route 1 in South Brunswick. The number of accidents on Route 1 has increased dramatically in the past year, according to Gambatese.

“The entire length of Route 1 should be considered a safe corridor,” he said.
