BRHS baseball struggles in first week

At first glance one would have though that Bordentown Regional High School boys’ varsity baseball pitching star Danny Sasso pitched poorly in the Scotties’ 7-0 home loss to Cinnaminson last Friday at BRHS.
However that was hardly the case. Sasso surrendered only four hits in the contest and none of the Pirates’ seven runs were earned as the Scotties made nine errors in the field.
"He threw the ball well. We just didn’t make the plays behind him," said Bordentown head coach Joe Sprague of Sasso.
   "We have first-inning jitters."
Bordentown gave up five unearned runs in the first inning as a few players struggled adjusting to their new positions. But Sprague feels that will change with time, though.
Brandon Fraser collected the Scotties’ lone hit of the game.
The Scotties did not play the Cinnaminson game at Gilder Field because the field was not quite ready on Friday.
Bordentown did host Riverside at Gilder on Tuesday, tough. Unfortunately, the Rams slipped away with an 8-5 victory.
Nonetheless, Fraser continued to swing the bat well and he clotted a triple and double and collected a pair of ribbies.
Meanwhile, Bordentown starter Kevin Malloy was also hurt by the club’s fielding as all but three of the eight runs he allowed in his five innings were unearned.
However, Bordentown did show a lot of late life in the contest. Mike Medina cracked a clutch two-out, two-run single in the fifth to make the score 8-4. And Sasso (2-for-4 with two RBI) hurled two innings of scoreless ball in relief. The team will get to where Coach Sprague wants them to be. It just needs more experience.
Bordentown (0-2) is scheduled at Holy Cross today (Thursday). It is scheduled to host Burlington City tomorrow (Friday). Then Bordentown is scheduled at New Egypt on Tuesday.
