Making Waves group plans fund-raiser Saturday at Princeton Shopping Center

Princeton University student organizers for Making Waves and merchants at the Princeton Shopping Center have planned a Shopper’s Day program of art and entertainment 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday to remember victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami and raise funds for CARE USA’s rebuilding efforts in the region.
University and community volunteers will demonstrate and teach shoppers how to fold paper waves and other origami models in the shopping center’s courtyard. Volunteers will also collect money for CARE’s Earthquake and Tsunami Relief and Reconstruction Fund. The suggested donation is $1 for each origami.
McCaffrey’s Supermarket has challenged folders by pledging to match the first 1,000 folded waves with a $1,000 check to CARE. Participating merchants at the shopping center will donate 5 percent of their sales on Making Waves Shopper’s Day to CARE. The day’s events, including folding and entertainment, are being underwritten by the Princeton Shopping Center Merchants Association.
Folders will be entertained by local artists performing music and stories from the tsunami region. Mike Wojik, master of the didgeridoo, will teach children how to play their own version of the Southeast Asian instrument. Storyteller Ron O’Reilly also will introduce listeners to the culture of the region. Dan Johnson and friends will play tabla drums from India, and four fourth-graders from Littlebrook Elementary School will perform Bollywood dances.
Making Waves is a community effort to remember the many people who lost their lives in the wake of the December tsunami, and raise funds for long-term reconstruction in communities hardest hit. Launched by Princeton University students and others attending an origami workshop at Cotsen Children’s Library in January, the effort has had the support of many institutions, organizations and individuals in the greater Princeton area.
In the event of inclement weather, origami folding will take place in the second-floor bistro of McCaffrey’s.
