Two Manville High School students witnessed their family members’ struggle while fighting cancer and became involved in fund-raising events in Manville to help raise money for the American Cancer Society (ACS).
Katie DaCruz and Andrew Schaefer, juniors at Manville High School, are organizing a car wash on Saturday in the high school’s parking lot to raise money for the ACS and the Relay for Life, an 18-hour national fund-raising event aimed at helping researchers find a cure for all forms of cancer.
"Last year, we raised $300 at our car wash. We hope to beat that total this weekend," Katie said.
The students will charge $10 for cars to be washed on the inside and exterior, including window washing and vacuuming; $15 for SUVs and vans; $7 for cars to be washed only on the exterior; and $10 for SUVs and vans, exterior only.
As team leaders, Katie and Andrew have been planning fund-raisers, like the car wash, as well as recruiting people to participate in Manville’s third annual Relay for Life, June 11 and 12.
"Katie and I just took it upon ourselves to be team leaders after participating in the Relay for Life for three years and raising money for a good cause," Andrew said.
The ACS is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer through education about healthier lifestyles and about risk factors that may cause cancer. ACS holds various walks and fund-raisers throughout the year that contribute to the education and prevention of cancer.
