To the editor:
Recent press coverage of South Brunswick makes reference to the fact that no elected officials attended the March 31 swearing in of a new police chief. As one of those elected officials, I want to correct the possible misconception that this was by choice.
Unfortunately, we were not invited. I received notice via e-mail of an announcement, not of any ceremony or press conference, about two and a half hours before the event, although by the coverage at least the press was notified. I did not review the e-mail until less than an hour and a half before the event was scheduled.
Again, the information I received via e-mail was that an announcement was going to be made, nothing more. While my employment makes it difficult to attend events during the workday although on this day I was free I would have preferred the option to attend such an event. I understand from the fine press coverage that the decision was made by our manager two weeks ago. It is not the first time we were not advised of such a ceremony.
This also occurred just about a month ago, with regard to two promotions to sergeant within our excellent Police Department. We were not notified of the promotion ceremony for that, as well. We were advised by the manager that this would not happen again and it is my sincere hope that it not.
The people of South Brunswick and the men and women of our Police Department know that my colleagues and I feel it is second to none. We are all very proud of our sworn officers and civilian support staff. It is important that the record be clear in this regard.
