Defeats Hopewell 12-7 in lacrosse battle

An insurance company had a popular slogan years ago that urged people to "own a piece of the rock."
The Pennington School boys lacrosse squad didn’t have to buy a policy to obtain their chunk of granite. The Red Raiders went out and captured "The Rock" with a 12-7 home triumph over Hopewell Valley last Saturday.
"The Rock" is a large piece of granite that is at stake when these two cross-town rivals battle each year. Senior attacker Tim Liwosz led the way for undefeated Pennington with five goals, while senior midfielder Sean Jasionowski had three goals, junior attacker Adam Toltzis added a pair, and senior midfielder Kyle McGann and sophomore midfielder Marcello Tosti each scored a goal. Senior goalie Max Owen made 15 saves.
"It was a heck of a ballgame," Red Raider head coach Dana Lindstrom said after his guys upped their record to 6-0, matching last year’s win total. "We took care of the ball and really were very efficient on offense."
HoVal, which trailed 6-2 at halftime, was led by two goals and an assist each from senior attacker Tyler Brewster and sophomore midfielder Eric Doran. Sophomore midfielder Mark Squicciarino had a goal and an assist, and sophomore midfielders Chris Tantum and Dan Reeves each had a goal. Senior attacker Pete Carroll added two assists, and sophomore goalie Kris Ryan made seven saves.
The Bulldogs (2-2) fell to Princeton 10-8 Monday and defeated visiting East Brunswick 10-9 Tuesday. Against the Little Tigers, HoVal at home trailed 6-2 at halftime before a second-half surge made things very interesting. Carroll had a pair of goals and an assist, while junior attacker Greg Reading, John Squicciarino, and Mark Squicciarino each scored two goals, and Brewster contributed a pair of assists.
Trailing by as many as five goals against East Brunswick, the Bulldogs put things together to earn their second win of the season. Carroll led the way with four goals and an assist.
