Guidelines given
Hopewell Valley senior citizens qualifying for a freeze on their property taxes have until June 1 to apply for the relief.
The New Jersey Property Tax Reimbursement Program compensates eligible senior citizens and disabled persons for property tax increases provided they meet income requirements spanning two years. For married couples, the combined income limit is $50,112 for 2004 and $49,081 for 2003. Single applicants must report an income of less than $40,869 for 2004 and $40,028 for 2003.
Applicants must be 65 or older or receiving federal Social Security disability benefits and have lived continuously in New Jersey for the last 10 years. They also must have lived in their current home for at least the last four years and have paid the full amount of taxes on that property for each year, including the year for which they apply for the freeze.
Applications are available at the Hopewell Valley Regional Board of Education offices at 425 S. Main St., Pennington. Copies also may be downloaded from the state Division of Taxation at www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/propfrez.htm or be received via mail by calling the Property Tax Reimbursement Hotline at 1-800-882-6597.
The Property Tax Reimbursement Program is separate from the Homestead Rebate and NJ Saver Rebate Programs. Relief must be sought from each program separately.
