Space is still available for the Monroe Township High School PTO Yard Sale.
Those interested in selling items at the event, scheduled for April 30, can rent parking spaces from which to sell for $10 each. Money raised at the event will go to PTO sponsored scholarships for graduating seniors.
Kathy Kolupanowich, PTO president and school board member, said the idea for a townwide event came from a townwide garage sale in Jamesburg last year, where garage sales were held at residences all over the borough.
"In Monroe you can’t do that, it’s too spread out," Ms. Kolupanowich said.
The PTO decided to have its sale at the high school, since it is a central location.
"Our PTO always has a very difficult time raising money because we compete with all the other organizations and classes in the high school. We want to give out more scholarships every year and this is something that doesn’t cost us anything to do," she said.
This year the PTO is awarding 28 scholarships of varying amounts to seniors that have met the criteria and were recommended by the school.
"The award winner is not necessarily the highest ranking student within the department," Ms. Kolupanowich said. "They are given to an individual who exemplifies scholarship, interest, effort, motivation, progress in a subject area and the likelihood that they will pursue that subject in secondary education."
With about 30 people signed up for the sale, there still are more than 100 spaces available.
"There is no deadline. They can come the day of the yard sale and get a spot. That’s not a problem, we have the whole parking lot. There’s a couple hundred spots there," Ms Kolupanowich said.
Those interested in selling items are responsible for bringing their own table, although people often sell from their cars. Vendors must remove everything they did not sell because there is no dumpster to dispose of the items.
The PTO will be selling food and drinks at the event. There is no rain date.
"We’re just going to check the weather report. If it’s drizzling in the morning we’ll keep it, if it’s pouring we’ll have to play it by ear," she said.
Those interested in obtaining a contract can pick one up at the Jamesburg Subway at 78 W. Railroad Ave. or call Ms. Kolupanowich at (732) 446-1709, Cheryl Allanby at (732) 416-0143 or Anne DeCandia at (732) 251-6410.
