SOUTH BRUNSWICK — Competing for a world title.

That is what’s at stake for one South Brunswick High School team as they head to the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at the University of Colorado in May.

The team, led by advisers Nicole Sanyigo and social studies teacher Samantha Saldanha, placed second at the Odyssey of the Mind state competition in April.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international problem-solving competition.

According to Saldanha, teams must find creative solutions for a variety of situations, creating a skit for judges. Judges look for creative thinking and thinking outside the box, Saldanha said.

South Brunswick’s team, consisting of six students, won at the regional and state levels with their dream sequence problem “In Your Dreams.” In this scenario, teams are required to include such elements as a nightmare scene or monster.

Teams, Saldanha said, are given the problems in March and will use the same skit for state and world competitions.

“I’m confident that they can compete very well,” Saldanha said of her team’s chances at the world competition.
