Carol A. Gilbert Smith

Mrs. Smith, 69, of the Parlin section of Sayreville, died April 25 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. She worked at National Lead Co., Sayreville, and was employed as a receptionist for several local chiropractors. A part-time aide for Assemblyman John Wisniewiski (D-19), she also served as recording secretary and vice chairwoman of the Sayreville Democratic Municipal Committee. She was a Democratic committeewoman in District 24 and chairperson of the Sayreville Shade Tree Commission. Surviving are her husband, Norbert; two sons, Brian Smith of Brick and David Smith of Point Pleasant; a brother, Carl Gilbert of the Hamilton Square section of Hamilton; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass is planned for 9:30 a.m. on April 29 at Our Lady of Victories Church, Sayreville. Interment will follow in New Calvary Cemetery, Parlin.

Stephen A. Sakalos

Mr. Sakalos, 75, of the Melrose section of Sayreville, died April 5 in Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division. Prior to his retirement in 2002, he was employed for 20 years as a custodian with the Sayreville Board of Education. Prior to that, he worked for Raritan Iron Works, South Amboy, and Raritan Copper Works, Perth Amboy. Surviving are his wife, Helen T. Fabiszewski Sakalos; a son, Stephen Sakalos Jr. of the Parlin section of Sayreville; two daughters, Nancy Ann Apito and Alice Ann Sakalos of Sayreville; and four grandchildren. A Mass was offered at Sacred Heart Church, South Amboy. Interment was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Parlin.

RoseMarie Grace Masia Pettyjohn

Mrs. Pettyjohn, 76, of Matawan, formerly of Keyport, died April 18 at home. Her husband, Jesse Pettyjohn Sr., died in 2002, and a daughter, Catherine Pleiman, died in 1994. Surviving are three sons, Michael M. Pettyjohn of Keyport, Jesse O. Pettyjohn Jr. of Brick and Marcus A.C. Pettyjohn Sr. of Matawan; four daughters, Mary F. Pettyjohn of the Laurence Harbor section of Old Bridge, Grace A. Kelly of Matawan, Honora C. DeMaio of Sayreville and Roselyn A. Tsamas of Old Bridge; two sisters, Lucy Furmato of the Cliffwood Beach section of Aberdeen and Sylvia Arotin of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, Angelo Masia of Keyport; and 19 grandchildren. A Mass was celebrated at St. Clement’s Church, Matawan. Entombment was in St. Joseph’s Mausoleum, Keyport.

Nancy Giovenco Mauriello

Mrs. Mauriello, 83, of Brick, formerly of the Morgan section of Sayreville, died April 20 in Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy division. Her husband, Louis N. Mauriello, died in 2003. Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Mauriello of Brick and Rosemarie Pollando of Sayreville; a son, Thomas Mauriello of North Brunswick; a sister, Anita Bressen of the Toms River section of Dover; three brothers, Richard Giovenco of Caldwell, Rudy Giovenco of Howell and George Giovenco of Sayreville; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson. A Mass was offered at St. Mary’s Church, South Amboy. Interment was in Christ Church Cemetery, also South Amboy.

David P. Graboski

Mr. Graboski, 56, of Matawan, died April 19 in Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Jessie Stopka Graboski. Surviving are his wife, Pamela Streeter Graboski; a daughter, Sarah Graboski of Piscataway; a son, Andrew Graboski of Old Bridge; and a sister, Susan Gerber of Connecticut. A Mass was offered at Most Holy Redeemer Church. Interment was in St. Gabriel’s Cemetery, Marlboro.

Roland Freeman

Mr. Freeman, 66, of Old Bridge, died April 24 in New York University Medical Center, New York City. Surviving are his wife, Patricia Behan Freeman; two sons, James and John, both of Old Bridge; three sisters, Edith Gangarossa of Pennsylvania, Joan Freeman of Colorado and Veronica McGann of New York; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass is planned for 10 a.m. on April 28 at St. Ambrose Church, Old Bridge. Interment will follow in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, East Brunswick.

Eli Ortiz

Mr. Ortiz, 27, of the Parlin section of Sayreville, died April 22 in Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy division. He was employed as an oil technician at Grease Monkey, Edison. Surviving are his wife, Janette Marrero Ortiz; four children, Peter, Aleesa, Krystina and Eliyah, all at home; his parents, Robert Lowe and Dr. Kathryn Mahon-Lowe of New York City; a sister, Carmen Alvarez of Queens, N.Y.; and a brother, Fernando O. Brown of Jersey City. A Mass was offered at Sacred Heart Church, South Amboy. Entombment was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Parlin section of Sayreville. Memorial contributions may be made to the family for a college fund to benefit the deceased’s children.

Harry Nels Christiansen

Mr. Christiansen, 80, of the Parlin section of Sayreville, died April 21 in Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy division. Prior to his retirement in 1990, he was employed as an iron worker for 48 years through the International Brothers of Iron Workers Local No. 373, Perth Amboy, where he served as vice president, president and assistant business agent. Surviving are his wife, Gladys Flynn Christiansen; two daughters, Janice Nakielny of Sayreville and Anne Bandola of Parlin; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Services were under the direction of Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home, Parlin. Interment was in Christ Church Cemetery, South Amboy.

Linda Chickella

Ms. Chickella, 53, of the Laurence Harbor section of Old Bridge, died April 19 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. She was employed as an administrative assistant at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, where she worked for 10 years. She was predeceased by her parents, Lavina and Michael Chickella. Surviving are many friends, including Madeline Gardner of Red Bank. Arrangements were under the direction of Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home, Parlin. Cremation was private.

Vincent Perschilli

Mr. Perschilli, 45, of Old Bridge, died April 17. His mother, Gertrude Riso Perschilli, died in 1988. Surviving are his wife, Joanne Civitello Perschilli; a son, Vincent, and a daughter, Crystal; his father, Vincent Perschilli Sr. of Monroe; two brothers, Anthony Perschilli of the Toms River section of Dover and Paul Perschilli of Monroe; and a sister, Diane Fummey of Manahawkin. A Mass was offered at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Old Bridge. Entombment was in Holy Cross Burial Park, South Brunswick.

Caterina Certo Maimone

Mrs. Maimone, 93, of Old Bridge, died April 21 in Old Bridge Manor. Her husband, Rosario Maimone, died in 1980, and a daughter, Grazia Catanese, died in 1996. Surviving are three sons, Giuseppe Maimone of East Brunswick, Santo Maimone of North Brunswick and Pietro Maimone of Hawaii; three daughters, Maria Ruggeri of Edison, Francesca Drulis of East Brunswick and Anna Cassissi of North Brunswick; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass was offered at St. Mary of Mount Virgin Church, New Brunswick. Interment was in St. Peter’s Cemetery, New Brunswick. Geraldine Ann Kulpa

Mrs. Kulpa, 55, of Monroe, died April 19 in Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge. Her husband, George J. Kulpa Jr., died in 1992. Surviving are a son, Michael J. Kulpa of Monroe; a daughter, Robyn Kulpa of Spotswood; a brother, Robert Oliver of Pennsylvania; and six grandchildren. Services were held at Eckman Funeral Home, Spotswood. Interment was in Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
