Obituaries for week of April 28

Frederick K. Bentley
   PENNINGTON — Frederick A. Bentley Jr., 93, died Thursday at the University Medical Center at Princeton.
   Born in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, England, his father Fred Bentley Sr. immigrated to America in 1920 to work in the Trenton Potteries.
   Mr. Bentley, and his mother and siblings, joined his father in Trenton in 1922 and moved to Lawrence in 1930. Mr. Bentley was educated in the Trenton schools and graduated from Trenton High School in 1929. He held several jobs before apprenticing as a butcher at Marty Carroll’s Butcher Shop in Lawrence and he eventually opened his own business known as Bentley’s Market in 1943. Mr. Bentley and his late wife, Laura owned and operated Bentley’s Market for over 40 years retiring in 1984.
   Mr. Bentley and his wife enjoyed the Jersey shore having owned a house on Long Beach Island for many years.
   The couple enjoyed growing orchids and were members of the New Jersey Orchid Society.
   Mr. Bentley was a charter member of the Lawrence Township First Aid Squad and a longtime member of the Lawrenceville Fire Company.
   Son of the late Fred Sr. and Annie Bentley, brother of the late Nellie Buxton, Grace Wauters, Frances McConnell, and Arthur Bentley, he is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Frederick and Robin Bentley of Lawrence, Arthur and Carol Bentley of Pennington, John T. Bentley of Lawrence, and Robert Wienmann of Ft. Lauderdale Fla.; six grandchildren, Kevin Bentley, Melissa Abrahams, Jennifer Bentley, Stacey Ellis, Bobby Wienmann, and Shirley Ann Lenard; two great-grandchildren, Brian Abrahams and Jenna Lenard; and several nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Wilson-Apple Funeral Home in Pennington.
   Burial was in the Lawrenceville Cemetery.

Joan F. Waaben
   Joan F. Waaben, died April 20 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. She was 71.
   Predeceased by her first husband Daniel E. Stevens, she is survived by her second husband, Sigurd Waaben; one daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Thomas Gallagher; three sons and daughters-in-law, Matthew and Nicole Stevens, Timothy and Kelli Stevens, and Peter and Jennifer Stevens; a stepson, Peter Waaben; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Nancy Waaben and Christopher and Stephanie Waaben; a stepdaughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Jonathan Fitch; nine grandchildren; four siblings, Fred Pries, Don Pries, Paul Pries and Eileen Bowerstock; lifelong friend Dorothy Sklarz; many nieces and nephews and numerous friends.
   A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday at St. James Church on Eglantine Avenue in Pennington.

Lewis K. Polla
   Lewis K. Polla, of Lawrence, died April 19 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton. He was 90.
   Born in Budapest, Hungary, he came to the United States in 1925. Mr. Polla resided in Green Point, Brooklyn for many years and formerly resided in Toms River for 19 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Polla was a retired architectural draftsman for Rockaway Metal Products in Queens, NY. He was a devoted Mets fan and enjoyed his rose garden and painting pictures.
   He is survived by his wife of 52½ years, Margaret Polla; a daughter and son-in-law, Margery and Michael Prokop of Hamilton; two grandchildren, Stephanie and Michael Prokop; a brother-in-law, Joseph Disparti of Long Island, NY; a sister, Ethel DeCarvalho of Brooklyn, NY; a brother and sister-in-law, Oscar and Mary Lou Polla of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Saul Colonial Home in Hamilton.
   Interment followed in Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, North Hanover Township.

Peter P. Cardo
   HAMILTON — Peter P. Cardo died Sunday in Capital Health Systems at Fuld in Trenton. He was 64.
   Born in New York City, NY, Mr. Cardo was a longtime Hamilton resident.
   He retired in 1995 from the state Department of Environmental Protection in Trenton.
   He was a member of the executive board at the James W. Alexander Elementary School PTA and Emily C. Reynolds Middle School PTA and was also a mediator for the Hamilton Township Municipal Court.
   He is survived by his wife Lynne Allsop; a daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and David Guerieri of Yardley, Pa.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Peter and Paula Cardo of Hamilton and Robert P. Cardo, at home; a brother, Joseph V. Cardo of Lawrence; and four grandchildren.
   Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hamilton.
   Family and friends may call 6-9 p.m. tonight at the Saul Colonial Home, 3795 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square.

Helen B. Klockner
   PENNINGTON — Helen B. Klockner, 85, died April 20 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Langhorne, Pa.
   Born in Barrington, she assisted her husband in diary farming in the Pennington area for over 25 years.
   She worked for Eastern Aircraft during World War II. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and the beach.
   Wife of the late Walter D. Klockner, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Paula Klockner of Lawrence; two daughters, Gale Klockner of Egg Harbor and Jill Klockner of Lawrence; a sister, Kathryn McGuire of Pennsylvania; three grandchildren, Brian, Tim and Julia Klockner of Lawrence; several nieces and nephews; and friends, Rose Marie Ricatto and Agnes Palmieri of Lawrence.
   Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Wilson-Apple Funeral Home in Pennington.
   Burial was in the Highland Cemetery, Hopewell.
