Poets Paul Muldoon, Robert Fagles and Yusef Komunyakaa will headline an evening of readings to benefit People and Stories/Gente y Cuentos, the literature-based humanities program, on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Princeton University’s James Stewart Theater, at 185 Nassau St.
For the past decade, a diverse and lively group of Latinos have gathered at the Princeton Public Library to read and discuss "cuentos" (stories). People and Stories/Gente y Cuentos has also collaborated with the library staff to offer the program in English, as well, to expose Princeton youth to the power of short stories to spark questions and insights about life.
Thursday’s benefit, which is underwritten by Glenemede Trust Company, will help to bring People & Stories/Gente y Cuentos to more groups in Trenton and other New Jersey locations.
The program aims to serve adults working on their GED, prisoners, homeless men and women, and Spanish-speakers learning English as a Second Language. Meetings take place in community centers. For eight consecutive weeks, short stories by such authors as James Joyce, Isabel Allende, Langston Hughes, Jorge Luis Borges and Nadine Gordimer will be discussed.
Gente y Cuentos/People & Stories is on the Web: www.peopleandstories.org.
Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at Micawber Books on Nassau Street in Princeton or by calling (609) 924-7512 or (609) 393-3230.
