First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day is designed to broaden support for environmental programs, rekindle public commitment to the environment and build community activism around the world through a range of events and activities.
Locally, students from throughout the county participated in a variety of art and science competitions, which were judged at the library. There were four winners from the local area:
First-graders who entered drew pictures describing a poem called “The World Is in My Hands,” and the winners included Julia Marter, a student at Taylor Mills School, Manalapan, who won first place and a $100 bond, and Elizabeth Galante, also a Taylor Mills student, earned second place and a $75 bond.
Second-graders made a poster illustrating the theme “My Favorite Thing in Nature.” First place and a $100 bond went to Wyatt Kudo, a student at Chesterbrook Academy in Manalapan, and second place, with a $75 bond, went to John Mejia, also a student at Chesterbrook.
