CHESTERFIELD The Board of Education Tuesday named a veteran middle school principal from Gloucester County as the new chief school administrator at Chesterfield Elementary School.
Constance Bauer, a resident of Mullica Hill and nine-year principal of the Charles W. Lewis Middle School in Gloucester Township, was unanimously named to replace Edward Gibson in Chesterfield’s top educational post.
After 25 years in the state’s school systems, including a stint as principal of the Peter Muschal School in the 1970s and five years as chief school administrator in Chesterfield, Dr. Gibson will retire on Aug. 31 at age 60. Dr. Bauer is expected to begin her tenure as helm of the school district on Aug. 15, according to board President Craig Thier.
Her starting salary will be $110,000 a year, said Board Administrator Louise Zoilkowski.
According to her bio, Dr. Bauer earned her doctorate in education at Rowan University and her master’s in educational administration at Glassboro State College. Originally a high school English teacher, Dr. Bauer moved on to become an assistant principal in the Gloucester Township School District in 1993 and, in 1996, became principal of the Lewis school.
She is also the author of several published articles, dealing with inequity and minority issues.
Mr. Thier said the board is overjoyed with its choice.
"We really liked her enthusiasm," said Mr. Thier. "She’s a really good fit, not only for our school (but) for our community."
