NEHS boys win Freedom track meet

The New Egypt High School boys’ track continued an amazing season this past Saturday by winning the Burlington County Scholastic League Freedom Division Championship, held at Northern Burlington. New Egypt won with 160 points.
"This post season meet was very important to win because we split with Palmyra and Florence for the regular season title and we wanted to show that we were outright the best team in the division," noted New Egypt Coach Sam Palumbo.
Matt Monkan won the 1600 (5.04), 3200 (11.02) and finished third in the 800 (2.11). Lee Hopkins won the javelin (171-4), discus, and finished second in the 100 (11.6) and third in the 200 (24.1). His throw of 127-9 on his last attempt in the discus set a new school record.
Brian Whiteley won the 800 (2.10), finished third in the 400 (53.6) and anchored the second place 4×400 team of Dave Ascione, Chris Ward and Davion Clanton to a school record time of 3.43.3 Clanton also placed sixth in the 400 (55.7).
Toomas Sepp and Steve Dey both set school records in the pole vault, jumping 10 feet to finish first and second. Freshman Sean Vazquez placed second in the 1600 (5.03), third in the 3200 (11.28) and sixth in the 800 (2.16).
Phil Murray, coming off an injured ankle, toughed it out to come in second in the 3200 (11.20) and fourth in the 1600 (5.06). Jamel Turner won the triple jump (36). Wes Bolton placed third in the high jump (5-4), fourth in the triple jump (35-3) and sixth in the long jump (17-6).
Other athletes scoring valuable points included Dion Oyebanji, Justin Conklin, Nick Markee and Matt Van Norman.
"This was an amazing win considering Coach Geist and I took over a program three years ago that never won a single dual meet, so we hope to continue our success in the future," Palumbo said.
