Michael Ramus
Illustrator and cartoonist
MONTGOMERY Michael Ramus died Thursday at Stonebridge at Montgomery retirement community. He was 87.
Born in Naples, Italy, he was a longtime Princeton resident.
He graduated from the Phillips Exeter Academy, attended Yale University and had further training at the Art Students League in New York City.
His first employment was as a comic book artist in New York City and as a set designer in San Francisco.
He became a commercial illustrator and cartoonist for major magazines, such as Life, Sports Illustrated, Smithsonian, Reader’s Digest and American Heritage. For a number of years, he drew a weekly cartoon for The Princeton Packet. Also a painter and sculptor, he worked in a variety of media including collage and papier mâché.
He was an enthusiastic amateur geologist, enjoying several trips to Red Lodge, Mont., with members of the Princeton University geology department. He was pleased to have unearthed the remains of a new type of dinosaur, which was subsequently named after him and displayed in the university geology exhibit.
He served four years in the Army during World War II. His duties included painting wartime patriotic posters. After the war, he volunteered as a night-time airplane spotter for civil defense in Princeton.
He was a member of the Society of Illustrators in New York City, the Princeton Artists Alliance and the Second Sunday River Poets.
Son of the late Dr. Carl Ramus and Anna Woods Tucker, husband of the late Grace Bigelow Cook, he is survived by his sister, Anne Ramus; daughters Anne Gray and Grace Ramus; son Peter Ramus; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service is being planned for June. Details will be available at www.kimblefh.com and will be announced in local papers.

Mildred C. Tindall

WEST WINDSOR Mildred "Millie" C. Tindall died Thursday at University Medical Center at Princeton.
Born in Trenton, Mrs. Tindall was a West Windsor resident most of her life.
She was a nurse and an Air Force first lieutenant, stationed in the labor-and-delivery unit of Luke Air Force Base Hospital in Arizona. She also was a registered nurse at Helene Fuld Medical Center.
She was a graduate of Trenton Cathedral High School and St. Francis School of Nursing, where she received her degree as a registered nurse.
Mrs. Tindall was a member of St. Gregory the Great Roman Catholic Church and the Mercer County Tennis Center. And she was extremely devoted to and actively supported her daughters in the equestrian world. She also enjoyed traveling.
Daughter of the late Giovannina and Joseph DiBenedetto, sister of the late Patricia and Joseph DiBenedetto Jr., she is survived by her husband of 38 years, Earl H. Tindall; daughters and sons-in-law Lynneva and Thomas J. Zahn of Montgomery Township, Patricia and Peter J. Demas of West Windsor, Pamela Tindall of West Windsor, Lisa Tindall-Melchior and Steve Melchior of Princeton, and Cynthia Kairewich of Weatherly, Pa.; son and daughter-in-law Kevin M. and Patricia Tindall of Quakertown, Pa.; sister Joan DiBenedetto of Washington Township; brothers, Rawnsley DiBenedetto of San Antonio, Texas, Ralph DiBenedetto of Bowling Green, Ohio, and Matthew DiBenedetto of Hamilton Township; grandchildren Taylor J., Chelsea A. and Tess M. Zahn, Phoebe M. Melchior, Michael and Jacqueline Tindall and Shawna Mokes; great-grandchild Kyra Wrecsics; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at A.S. Cole Son & Co. Funeral Home, 22 N. Main St., Cranbury.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated 11a.m. at St. Gregory the Great Roman Catholic Church, 4620 Nottingham Way, Hamilton.
Interment will follow in Dutch Neck Presbyterian Church Cemetery, West Windsor.

Stephen W. Koontz

WEST WINDSOR Stephen W. Koontz died Friday at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, New York. He was 57.
Born in Indiana, he resided in various parts of New Jersey and was a West Windsor resident the past 16 years.
He retired in 2003, after 15 years as a director at Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products Co. in Montgomery, but still continued as a consultant. He taught chemistry briefly at Monroe High School.
He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, where he also received a doctorate.
He is survived by his parents, Eldon and Gloria Koontz; wife Lynne Mortimer Koontz of West Windsor; daughter Kimberley Koontz of West Windsor; sister Rebecca Stumm of Buffalo, N.Y.; and several aunts and cousins.
The funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, 40 Vandeventer Ave., Princeton.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Douglas H. Hahn

HIGHTSTOWN Douglas Hesketh Hahn of Meadow Lakes died Wednesday at University Medical Center at Princeton. He was 93.
Born in Ridgewood, he was a former resident of Glen Rock, Manhattan, Mantoloking, Bay Head, Wall Township and Princeton from 1993 to 1996 before moving to Meadow Lakes.
An executive at B. Altman & Co. from 1934 to 1984, he served successively as an assistant buyer, a buyer, research director, and advertising and sales promotion director. After retiring in 1979, he continued with the company until 1984 as its director of consumer, community and legislative affairs. During that time, he served as president and a director of the 34th Street Midtown Association, a civic organization founded in 1909, and as chairman of the New York State Council of Retail Merchants, now the Retail Council of New York State.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, with his late brother, Dane Francis Hahn, as the manager, he owned and operated the Dale Yacht Basin in Bay Head.
Mr. Hahn graduated cum laude from Princeton University in 1934 and was an active Princeton alumnus, serving as president of the Princeton Alumni Association of Paterson, Passaic and Ridgewood, and for 10 years as president of the Princeton Alumni Association of Northeast Ocean and Monmouth counties. He chaired the 25-year reunion of the Class of 1934 and served for a time as class agent.
Son of the late Ethel Winifred Hesketh Hahn and Louis B. Hahn, husband of the late Gloria Kaufman Lister Hahn, who died in March, he is survived by a son and daughter from his earlier marriage to the late Luella Gray Cotterell, James D. Hahn of Dagsboro, Del., and Gail Winifred Austin of Rochester, N.Y. He is also survived by grandsons Jason and Ryan Hahn; granddaughters Margaret and Elizabeth Austin; nephew Dane F. Hahn, Jr.; and daughter-in-law Jacqueline Jessup Hahn.
The funeral was Monday.

Donald P. Albury
University media specialist
LAWRENCE Donald P. Albury died Sunday at the University Medical Center at Princeton. He was 54.
Born in the Bronx, N.Y., he was raised in Manhattan.
In 1986, he joined the computing and information technology division of Princeton University as assistant director of media services. Over the following 19 years, he became manager of media services within the Office of Information Technology.
Before coming to the university, he was audio-visual coordinator for Teachers College in New York, where he worked for more than 17 years.
He attended Corpus Christi School in New York City, where he sang in the boys’ and men’s choir, and he graduated from Power Memorial Academy in 1968, where he was president of the glee club. He received a bachelor’s degree from Empire State College in 1980 and a master’s degree from Teachers College, Columbia University, in 1982.
A lover of the outdoors and an expert paddler, his wilderness trips to the Algonquin Provincial Park area of Ontario as a young man gave way to yearly trips to Nova Scotia with his family. He loved the opera of Puccini, the ballet of Balanchine and the philosophy of Monty Python.
He was active member of the chancel choir of the Princeton United Methodist Church.
Son of the late Irene and Ray, brother of the late Richard, he is survived by his wife of 23 years, LaVerna; daughter Jennifer; sister-in-law Marilyn Albury; nieces and nephews Elizabeth, Tom, Carolyn (Fauci), Richard Jr., William and Joseph; and great-nephews and great-nieces Michael, Samantha and Megan Fauci.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Princeton United Methodist Church, Nassau Street at Vandeventer Avenue, Princeton.
Visiting hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, 40 Vandeventer Ave., Princeton.
Burial will be in Princeton Cemetery.
