Hopewell Township police are alerting Valley residents to a driveway-paving scam being perpetrated in the area.
According to Capt. George Meyer, "individuals from a paving company stop at a house and tell the homeowner that they have just finished a paving job in the area and have some leftover material. They offer to patch or repair a portion of the homeowner’s driveway for a couple of hundred dollars. The pavers then proceed to pave the entire driveway in a hurried and slipshod fashion and present the homeowner with a bill for several thousand dollars."
The Police Department warns residents to be wary of contractors of any type soliciting business by knocking on a door uninvited. Residents should remember that a deal that "sounds too good to be true is probably not on the up and up. Residents should check with the Better Business Bureau before employing unknown contractors or companies to do work on their property," said Capt. Meyer.
All individuals soliciting for a business or sales door-to-door are required to obtain a permit from the local municipality, i.e., Hopewell Borough or Hopewell Township.
