Julius Cohen
Rutgers law professor
Julius Cohen of Princeton died Saturday at home. He was 94.
Born in New York City, he lived in Princeton for 46 years.
He was a professor of law at Rutgers School of Law at Newark from 1957 to 1981 and a Guggenheim Fellow from 1963 to 1964. He was a visiting professor at Yale University from 1958 to 1959.
Upon his retirement from Rutgers, he was a visiting lecturer at Jilin University in Changchun, China, as well as a visiting distinguished professor at California Western School of Law for the spring semesters of 1982, 1983 and 1985.
Mr. Cohen received his bachelor’s, master’s and law degrees from West Virginia University.
In 1935, he joined the West Virginia University Department of Political Science. During this time, he served as an adviser to the West Virginia Legislature, the West Virginia Office of Civilian Defense, was an aide to the West Virginia governor, and became the chairman of the West Virginia Election Committee from 1941 to 1943. He joined the faculty of University of Nebraska in 1946, moving to New Jersey in 1956.
Mr. Cohen was a contributing author to works on administrative law, constitutional law and labor law, and he wrote many articles for professional publications on various legal issues.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lillian Tyson Cohen; and his brother, Milton Cohen, of Morgantown, W.Va.
Funeral services and interment will be private. There are no calling hours.

Jean E. Smith
Longtime West Windsor resident
WEST WINDSOR Jean E. Smith died Thursday at home. She was 84.
Born in Lambertville and raised in Princeton, Mrs. Smith had been a resident of West Windsor for more than 40 years.
She was a homemaker her entire life, a member of the Princeton Junction Fire Co. No. 1 Ladies Auxiliary and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5700 in Hightstown.
Mrs. Smith was an avid reader and dressmaker.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Earl L. Smith Jr.; daughters and sons-in-law Jacqueline J. and Vincent W. Leone of Willingboro and Kathy Lee and Kevin A. Boehm Sr. of Wall; son Earl L. Smith III of Sutton, Alaska; sister Mary Virginia Pierre of Lawrence; grandchildren Kevin, Brenda, Chip, Selina, D’Arcy, Seth, Jayme, Ethan, Fred, Peter, Bell and Hazel; seven great-grandchildren with another on the way; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at Saul Colonial Home, 3795 Nottingham Way, Hamilton.
Interment will follow in Princeton Memorial Park, Veterans Section, Robbinsville.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Joseph R. Cox
Senior taxation clerk
LAWRENCE Joseph R. Cox died suddenly at home Thursday. He was 60.
Born in Princeton, he graduated from St. Paul’s School and Princeton High School Class of 1962.
He was a senior clerk in the document-control center of the taxation division at the New Jersey Department of the Treasury for 17 years. He previously worked for Opinion Research in Princeton. He began his working career at his father’s Douglas MacDaid/Country Squire Men’s Shop in Princeton.
He was a member of the Communications Workers of America Local 1033. He also served in the Princeton unit of the National Guard for six years.
Son of the late Joseph and Miriam Cox, husband of the late Patricia E. Cox, he is survived by brother and sister-in-law Frank J. and Christine Cox of Lawrence; sister-in-law and her husband Margaret and Glen Simmons of Hopewell Township; brother-in-law William J. Long of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, 40 Vandeventer Ave., Princeton.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. by his nephew, Father Mark Hunt, at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, 214 Nassau St., Princeton.
Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Princeton.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
