Monmouth Council of Girl Scouts, Farmingdale, is seeking nominations for its Women of Distinction Award, with deadline for nomination June 30.
Nominees should be outstanding women that have made a positive impact in the community and been exceptional role models for young women. The Council has given the award the past 18 years.

Lifeguard rowing event in Brick, Seaside July 13
Lifeguards and recreational rowers of all ages will gather at Beaton Boat Yard in Brick July 13 at 9 a.m. (registration is 7:30-8:45 a.m.) to experience the competition, camaraderie and wide array of unique craft in what is New Jersey’s largest surfboat rowing event, according to the press release.
Viking Promotions’ signature event, the New Jersey State Rowing Championships, covers seven miles of the open waters of Barnegat Bay, passing through 14 beach communities from the Mantoloking Bridge to Seaside Heights. The fee to enter is $25 in advance or $35 on race day.
Those who attend the event will have the opportunity to see not only many of the area’s top lifeguards and competitive rowers, but also an assortment of surf-rescue boats, dories, Jersey skiffs, sculls and custom rowing craft.
This fifth annual race — with 12 boat classes, five age groups and five rowing combinations — is open to any type of rowing craft. All proceeds of the race will benefit the Ocean County College Sailing Program.

St. Veronica’s annual
parish fair June 22-25
St. Veronica’s Church will host its annual parish fair, God Bless America,” June 22 and 23 from 6 to 10 p.m., and June 24 and 25 from 6 to 11 p.m. The festival will feature free admission and parking, nightly and super 50/50 drawings, carnival rides, games, food and entertainment. Wednesday and Thursday night is family night offering unlimited rides for $15 per person. In addition, a “Mega wristband,” which allows unlimited access to rides all four nights of the fair, may be purchased for $30.

Conservation photo
contest accepting photos
The Ocean County Soil Conservation District (SCD) is now accepting entries for the 2005 Conservation Photo Contest. The contest is open to those who are at least 18 years old. Entrants must submit a photo that has been taken within Ocean County of a landscape, waterscape, wildlife, and/or people interacting with the environment. Winning entries in the past have depicted the diverse beauty of Ocean County.
The size of the print can be 4 by 6 inches or 5 by 7 inches, in color or black and white. The negative must be included with the entry. Digital photos will be accepted if printed on photo-quality paper and accompanied by a written statement attesting to the origin of the photo.
Mail entries to: Ocean County SCD, 714 Lacey Road, Forked River 08731. A stamped, self-addressed envelope should be included for those who want the entry returned.
The contest deadline is July 22. First-, second- and third-place winners will receive an 8-by-10-inch copy of their entry and a one-year subscription to National Wildlife. Lakewood offers many
options for summer
The 2005 Summer Recreation brochure describing all programs, events and activities available this summer will be mailed to all Lakewood residents. Most programs are free to Lakewood residents and include: seven supervised playgrounds with free lunches for children ages 6 to 15; a “Summer Fun Camp “for children ages 3 to 6; golf, tennis and basketball clinics; tee-ball and pitching machine leagues; gymnastics; track program; instrumental music camp; and a summer theater workshop. “Fun Night” for special needs students will utilize the handicapped accessible playground equipment at the Oak Street School. In addition, there will be a “Carousel of Music” 22 concert series. Plans are also underway for the annual fireworks display scheduled for July 3 at Lake Carasaljo. Get ‘All Shook Up’ with Broadway show trip
Attention Elvis Fans! The Lakewood Community School is accepting reservations for a bus trip to the new Broadway musical, “All Shook Up,” scheduled for June 15 at the Palace Theater in New York City. Car, motorcycle & truck show at Howell High
The Technology Student Association (TSA) at Howell High School will host a car, motorcycle and truck show June 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the high school. Proceeds of the show will benefit the American Cancer Society as well as the TSA’s national trip.

Middle school student
attends conferences
Emily Truax, 14, an eighth-grader at Carl W. Goetz Middle School, in Jackson, will be attending the 2005 National Juniors Leaders Conference (NJLC) in Washington D.C., in July. The NJLC is an invitational leadership program for our nation’s most academically talented and promising young leaders. Exceptional middle school students, who have a record of academic achievement and extracurricular or community involvement, are invited to participate from across the United States and around the world.
In addition, Emily was recommended by the Builders Club and sponsored by the N.J. Kiwanis Foundation to attend the 2004 New Jersey Leadership Training Institute at The College of New Jersey in Trenton last July. Only one or two students from participating schools throughout the state of New Jersey are chosen each year. Emily was given the honor of presenting the invocation speech at the graduation ceremony.
In July of this year, Emily will attend the Great Books Summer Reading Program at Amherst College, Amherst, Mass. The program is for “outstanding young readers” and is led by well-known authors and professors.
Emily has maintained high honor roll status and received Student of the Month for every year that she has been in middle school. In addition, she is a member of Honors Chorus, the Builders Club and the Reading Club at her school. She also belongs to the Jackson Recreational Senior Softball League.

Allaire Village to host
flea market, wedding
Allaire Village at Allaire State Park, Route 524, Wall Township, has two special events planned for this coming weekend.
The first event will be a summer flea market slated to take place June 11 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature more than 100 vendors displaying old, new and handmade items. Admission is free, but there is a $5 per-car entrance fee to the park. The rain date is June 12.
The “Wedding of Maria Allaire,” a re-creation of an 1836 wedding ceremony, will take place June 12 at 1:45 p.m. in the historic Allaire Village Chapel.
Heather Dunn, of Wall Township, will portray Maria. She will be wearing a dress designed and sewn by volunteer Annamari Klose, of Eatontown. The groom will be portrayed by Robert Kutz, of Howell.
Mr. Allaire, portrayed by Jack Giampalmi, of Brick, will arrive at the church with his daughter in a horse-drawn carriage.
The service will be conducted by Bill Gerhauser, of Hamilton, portraying the Rev. Thomas Tanser.
Following the ceremony, all guests will be invited to the nearby gazebo for wedding cake, donated by Freedman’s Bakery in Belmar.
