RAIDERS WIN STATE TITLE

Campbell shutout keys Group 4 baseball triumph

The Hillsborough High baseball team capped its historic, fabulous season with the ultimate championship victory Saturday at Toms River North.
Hillsborough (21-5) remained undefeated in tournament play this spring with a 5-0 victory over Watchung Hills in the NJSIAA Group 4 final. The Raiders ended the season on a 10-game winning streak, taking home the Somerset County, Central Jersey Group 4 and State Group 4 titles in the process.
HHS senior ace Drew Campbell (10-2) blanked Watchung Hills for the second straight time in tournament play to earn the victory. Campbell had shut down the Warriors for 10 innings in a 1-0 county semifinal thriller but was even more dominant this time, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out six.
The Raider bats did enough damage to deal Watchung ace Matt Giannini (9-1) his first loss in 17 decisions. Mark Demetriou’s two-run single started the scoring in the top of the second when the Raiders took a 3-0 lead. Adam Rothblatt beat out an infield hit for another RBI in the third and the other two runs scored on errors.
