MANALAPAN — The annual re-enactment of the Battle of Monmouth will take on June 18-19 at Monmouth Battlefield State Park, Route 33.
The battle between American and British forces took place on June 28, 1778 in an area of present day Manalapan and Freehold Township in an area generally bounded by Wemrock Road, Route 33 and Freehold-Englishtown Road (Route 522).
The British forces were heading for New York when they were engaged by the Americans in a heated battle on the sweltering afternoon of June 28, 1778. The battle gave rise to the legend of Molly Pitcher. Following the day-long battle, the British left under cover of darkness and continued their march to New York. The Americans declared victory.
The Friends of Monmouth Battlefield and the state park service are working together to assure that the re-enactors and the general public have an enjoyable experience.
