Teens get taste of work world

LAKEWOOD — Thirty members of the Lakewood High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club now have a better idea about some of the skills they will need if they become an attorney, a web designer, a financial planner, a bank employee or a psychologist.

On May 24, state Sen. Robert Singer’s office along with the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce sponsored FBLA Day. Maureen Stankowitz, executive director of the chamber, and Pam Ulrich, executive assistant, paired 30 FBLA students with business sponsors who represented the business interests of the students.

Two FBLA students spent the day “job shadowing” at Singer’s office. Other students spent the day with the law firm of Rothstein, Mandel, Strohm, Must and Gertner, the law firm of Carluccio, Leone, Dimon, Doyle and Sacks, Bank of America, DPT Lakewood Inc., Preferred Behavioral, Girl Scouts of Ocean County, Single Throw Inc., Merrill Lynch of Toms River, Jersey Mike’s Submarines of Lakewood, the Lakewood Center Laundromat, Move Ahead 1 and Ocean First Bank.

Singer’s 30th Legislative District office sponsored a luncheon for the students at the Ramada Inn, Toms River. Singer (R-Ocean) presented each student with a State of New Jersey Legislative Commendation.

Charles Mandell, education chairman of the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce, said he believes it is extremely valuable for the nation’s future business leaders to interact with the business community and gain a firsthand knowledge of the business world.

According to a press release, Mandell is instrumental in the annual Chamber of Commerce scholarship fund, which presents a cash award to one or two FBLA graduating seniors.

FBLA is a club advised by Mary Starace, a Lakewood High School business teacher.
