Metuchen Recreation Commission goes ‘Mad’
The Metuchen Recreation Commission is sponsoring a Mad Science workshop titled “Mad Machines and Junior Engineers” for children ages 6-10 from 9 a.m. to noon June 27 through July 1.
Participants will design and build bridges using simple tools and their imaginations. They will also construct a geodesic dome large enough for all campers to sit inside; build their own catapults to take home; and work simple machines such as pulleys, wedges, screws and levers. In addition, youngsters will play robots around an obstacle course while learning the science of robotics. Class location will be announced at a later date. Cost of the week long program is $110. Youngsters can ‘Catch a Dragon Tale’ at library
The children’s department of the Edison Public Library will hold registration in person or by phone beginning June 27 for “Catch a Dragon Tale” Children ages 2-5 — with parent/caregiver — who are brave enough to “scale” the walls of a castle can catch a dragon by its library “tale” through stories, videos and other surprises. Registration is limited and open to Edison residents only. The program will be held at the Edison Main Library, 340 Plainfield Ave., at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. July 5, and at the Clara Barton Branch, 141 Hoover Ave., at 2 p.m. July 7.

‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ to be presented June 30
In conjunction with the Forum Theatre, the Metuchen Cultural Arts Commission will present “Raiders of the Lost Ark” — at 7:30 p.m. June 30. Doors open at 7 p.m. The 1981 Steven Spielberg film, which is set during the rise of the Third Reich, follows the adventures of archaeologist and college professor Indiana Jones, who must overcome many obstacles to rescue a sacred box containing the original Ten Commandments. Admission is $5. Concessions will be sold. The theater is located at 314 Main St. in Metuchen. Funeral home to offer free bereavement support
The Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Ave., Metuchen, is offering a bereavement support group. Ongoing sessions will be held every Wednesday and Thursday morning from 10:30 a.m. to noon, as well as Wednesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. The program, which is free of charge, will take place at the funeral home.
Carol Burner, a certified grief recovery specialist, will facilitate the program. A professional with a master’s degree in counseling from Seton Hall University, South Orange, she has spent the past eight years offering individual and group counseling to clients suffering from significant and tragic losses. Cruise Night 2005 slated during summer months
The Metuchen Area Chamber of Commerce will present Cruise Night 2005: Antique Car Series July 6, Aug. 3 and Sept. 7 (the first Wednesday of the summer months), with no rain dates scheduled.
There will be a prime-time DJ, live bands and trophies. National Miss Teen 2005, Samantha Hahn, will make a guest appearance.
