Work on a small bridge on Davidsons Mill Road is expected to last until the end of the year, according to county officials.
The $1.1 million project began in April when Sparwick Contracting of Union started demolition and reconstruction of the bridge, according to Middlesex County Assistant Engineer Rich Wallner.
Mr. Wallner said Monday the bridge was deemed structurally deficient following an inspection last year. He said the federal government requires that all bridges be inspected every two years.
He said the two-lane bridge could not handle the load capacity it was designed for. He said he did not know what that capacity was.
The bridge goes over the Oakey Brook, which runs from Farrington Lake across Route 130 and Route 1 and through Brunswick Acres.
In the meantime, traffic from Route 130 to Davidsons Mill Road is being diverted to Georges Road in North Brunswick and then directed up Church Lane to Riva Avenue and Davidsons Mill Road.
Traffic from Davidsons Mill Road heading toward Route 130 is being diverted south on Riva Avenue near Davidsons Mill Pond and onto Old Georges Road, which leads to Route130.
