Marlboro’s Tony Giarratano made his Major League debut with the Detroit Tigers on June 1. Giarratano, who plays shortstop, has appeared in 14 games for the Tigers and is batting .143 with a home run and four RBIs. He was playing for the Tigers’ Double-A affiliate, Erie, when the team brought him up to the Major League to fill in for injured shortstop Carlos Guillen. Tiger manager Alan Trammel said the team liked what it saw from Giarratano during spring training.
“He’s a baseball player,” Trammel said. “He’s very attentive. He’s a sponge. He just enjoys watching, picking things up. … I think, looking back at spring training, that he thought he could play up here. We thought he needed a little seasoning. Hey, this might be taking a chance, but we think it’s worth it.”
At Erie, Giarratano was batting .253 with two home runs and 22 RBIs. He was on a 16-game hitting streak when the Tigers brought him up.”
Giarratano, a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy, played his college ball at Tulane University before signing with the Tigers.

On Saturday, July 9, the Belmar Improvement Fund, in collaboration with the Jersey Shore Running Club, will present the 29th Annual Belmar Five Mile Run.
The 2005 Belmar Five Mile run is named in memory of longtime Belmar resident, Johnny Cobb. In addition to being an originator of the race, he had a 25-year career in the Belmar Police Department, and was a graduate and supporter of the St. Rose School, and promoted local sports all of his life. A portion of race proceeds will go toward a scholarship at St. Rose in memory of Johnny Cobb.
Along with the main Five Mile event, we offer a Fitness Walk and Kids’ Races scheduled for Friday night, July 8, both of which have continued to become more popular each of the last several years. All events will be held in Belmar, which is known, of course, for its beautiful beaches and boardwalk.
Registration is still available. You can register through the mail, on-line, or in person Wednesday through Friday of race week–– July 6, 7 and 8, 6-8 p.m. For locations and race information, visit www.belmar5.com or call (732) 571- 2162.
