The night sky over the South Brunswick High School will be filled with explosively vibrant colors on Monday as the township celebrates the nation’s independence with a bang.
The township’s annual July Fourth festivities are set to begin at the Ridge Road complex at 7:30 p.m. with a free performance by the legendary New Jersey shore cover band the Nerds.
Recreation Supervisor Bonnie Bruccoleri said the Nerds are scheduled to perform until sundown, when the fireworks are ready to begin.
"The fireworks start at dusk, which is usually between 9:05 p.m. and 9:10 p.m.," Ms. Bruccoleri said. "We usually say they last between 20 and 25 minutes depending on how much time elapses between shooting them off."
Ms. Bruccoleri said some township nonprofit groups including the Police Athletic League, the South Brunswick Athletic Association, Citizens for Independent Living, and the High School PTA have been asked to come and sell refreshments.
"I heard from a couple of them, but the only one I know that is coming for sure is CIL," Ms. Bruccoleri said Tuesday. "Sometimes, I hear from them just a couple of days beforehand. We have a contract with those organizations to provide those programs for the community, and it is a good way to raise money for those programs."
Ms. Bruccoleri said that police estimated that between 7,000 and 8,000 people watched the fireworks last year. The Police Department expects a similar turnout this year.
Parking will be available in the high school lot.
In the event of rain, the concert will be held in the high school gymnasium and the fireworks will be held July 5 at sundown.
