WEST LONG BRANCH — Next Friday is the deadline for any Monmouth Beach resident willing and able to serve an unexpired term on the Shore Regional High School Board of Education to submit paperwork to the district offices.

The regional school board is hoping to soon appoint a successor to former board member Susan Howard, who represented Monmouth Beach on the panel until this spring, by its next public meeting on Aug. 25 or the subsequent one on Sept. 22, according to Stephen J. Brennan, district business administrator.

Résumés and letters of interest from prospective board members are due in the district offices at 132 Monmouth Parkway, West Long Branch, by July 29, he said.

“The board will review those applications and interview [applicants],” Brennan said. “The appointment will take place at a regular public meeting.”

In compliance with state laws, Howard stepped down after she won election to Monmouth Beach’s Board of Commissioners in May and was subsequently appointed mayor.

Howard’s current three-year term was due to expire in April 2007.

As a result, candidates seeking to serve for the balance of the 2005-06 school board year must not be holding office as a mayor or a member of a governing body within the district, which also includes West Long Branch, Oceanport and Sea Bright.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens who have resided in Monmouth Beach for at least one year. They must also have the ability to read and write English and must not have any interest in any contract with or claim against the Shore Regional board, he explained.

The letter of interest should also state an applicant’s desire to serve and the qualifications one can bring to the position.

The Shore Regional High School board will oversee a $12.1 million budget in the 2005-06 academic year. Classes begin for the ninth-through-12th-grade district at its campus off Route 36 on Sept. 8.
