The Township Committee approved $3,300 in new spending Monday to cover the cost of wiring needed for cameras to be installed in the Police Department’s new interrogation room.
Mark Berkowsky, whose firm Berkowsky and Associates is managing the $3.2 million police station construction project, recommended that the Township Committee approve the money for wiring first, rather than $10,600 for wiring and cameras. Chief Jay Hansen said Tuesday the cameras will be purchased separately at a later date.
Mr. Berkowsky said the wiring work should be done while contractors have better access to areas behind walls.
Last month, the Township Committee granted contractors working on the police station a 21-day extension for the completion of the building.
Construction is set to be completed by Oct. 9, with a Nov. 1 move-in. Mr. Berkowsky cited changes in plans for the installation of heating, air conditioning and fire sprinklers in the building and a delay in getting public utilities to the building as reasons for the delay.
Construction on the station began in November of 2004. The new police station will be a one-story, L-shaped, 16,000-square-foot building. It is being built on a 1.9-acre parcel on Station Road.
