Some Freehold Borough restaurants are helping to collect funds for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

More than a dozen downtown restaurants are expected to join the YMCA of Western Monmouth County, Freehold Borough, in helping to raise funds for the Gulf Coast.

Throughout October, restaurant patrons will be asked to contribute $1 or more when presented with their bill and will receive a receipt on the spot for their tax-deductible donation. The participating restaurants are all members of the Freehold Center Partnership Restaurant Association. Some have agreed to match their customers’ donations.

At the September meeting of the Freehold Center Partnership’s restaurant committee, YMCA Community Center Director Mel O’Neal, who has friends and family members who lost homes and businesses in New Orleans, asked restaurant owners to become involved in the fund-raising campaign.

Fliers will be posted in the windows of participating restaurants. For more information or to obtain a guide to the restaurants, call the Freehold Center Partnership, (732) 462-3584, or visit www.freeholdcenter.com.
