Compromises possible for bridge closing

By: Mae Rhine
The emergency closing of the Centre Bridge-Stockton bridge will be inconvenient to residents, business owners and tourists.
   But it’s needed.
The safety of the span is in question because of years of corrosion and deterioration. That’s due primarily, according to Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission officials, from deicing materials dragged from roads onto the steel.
The deterioration can’t be avoided; roads have to be salted for the safety of motorists much the same as bridges have to be repaired for safety reasons.
But people do have the opportunity to send comments and suggestions to the commission about the two-week emergency closing to begin in October, perhaps as early as next week. It’s also not a bad time to offer their concerns about the longer closing next year when structural repairs will begin.
Lambertville officials and residents had time to make their concerns known. That input resulted in a shuttle service back and forth from New Hope, among other concessions.
We all know the repairs are needed. And the commission has shown its willingness to compromise and make things easier for local motorists.
