Holmdel girls flex muscles on the courts

The hardware is starting to accumulate at Holmdel High School.

Jackie Wu took home the first singles title, and Holmdel, No. 1 in state, swept all five flights at the Monmouth County Tournament on Oct. 3 at Tindall Park in Middletown.

Holmdel had 30 points, topping Manasquan and Wall, both with 16.

Wu, the top seed at first singles, defeated Tahlia Smoke, of Manasquan, 6-0, 6-3, in the final. At second singles, Wu’s teammate, Maryanna Milchutsky, stopped Julianne Kasinow, of Wall, 6-1, 6-1, in the final. Holmdel’s Stephanie Sher won her final-round match at third singles with a 6-3, 6-3, triumph against Walls Carly Graver.

Holmdel’s Rose Yan and Renee Lee posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Manasquans Dana Tausek and Chase Fitzsimmons at first doubles, and Jessica Liu and Stephanie Huang, seeded second at second doubles, topped Nija Patel and Kristen Gabriel, of Shore Regional, 1-6, 6-0, 6-0, in their final.

The Hornets were hoping for some dry weather earlier this week so that they could get in the Shore Conference Tournament final against third-seeded Manasquan. On Monday, and the North II Group III semifinal match with Morristown yesterday. This weekend, Wu and the Yan-Lee combination will be in action in the NJSIAA individual and doubles championship tournaments at Mercer County Park.
