The Metuchen Pop Warner Cheer squads traveled to Kenilworth on Saturday to compete in the Raritan Valley Conference cheer tournament. Over 24 teams from area towns competed in a number of divisions.
The flag team looked terrific doing their exhibition routine. The Junior Pee Wee and Pee Wee squads both brought home second-place trophies and medals in their divisions. The Midget team received medals for first place. All three teams qualified to move on to the regional finals held next month at the Sovereign Arena in Trenton. On Sunday, the Bulldogs hosted Clark in wet, muddy games held at Edgar Field. The Junior Pee Wee team won, 26-7, with the Pee Wees losing a tough game, 33-13. The Midget squad shutout the Crusaders, 22-0.
The Edgar Middle School boys soccer team is off to a great start, with a 3-1 record. Losing their first game, 3-2, at John Adams, the Bulldogs breezed through their next three games, defeating Thomas Jefferson, 6-1, at home, then traveling to Herbert Hoover and Highland Park for 4-0 shutouts in both games.
The Rutgers University women’s volleyball team, which is 8-11 on the season, got another victory against a conference opponent this past Sunday when they swept Georgetown (5-13) by the scores of 30-23, 31-29, 31-29.
With Rutgers down by the score of 29-26 and facing game point, the Scarlet Knights rallied to score five straight points, taking game two and a 2-0 lead in the match. Rutgers never looked back from there. Junior Lora Yankauskas recorded a match-high 12 kills, while senior Courtney Stout and freshman Kyra Thompson had 11 a piece. Freshman Roxy Calder led with 21 assists. On Saturday at 2 p.m., Rutgers will play the Villanova Wildcats.
