MONROE — A two-hour chase through the southern end of town Wednesday morning proved that township police officers don’t like to horse around.
Detective Sgt. Lawrence Linke said police received a report of a loose horse in the vicinity of Dey Grove Road at about 9:04 a.m. Wednesday. Officers responding to the report approached the animal, which fled for two miles down Perrineville Road and onto Route 33, Sgt. Linke said.
The horse galloped east in the westbound lane of traffic on Route 33, where the officers caught it with the help of a passing motorist and tied it to a fence post, Sgt. Linke said. But the horse broke loose and ran into the woods south of the Route 33 in Millstone, he said.
A local veterinarian called to the scene by police retrieved the horse from the woods, Sgt. Linke said. The horse, which was not injured, was returned to its owners, who live on White House Way, he said.
Sgt. Linke said it is not clear how the animal got loose. No summonses were issued to the horse or its owners, he said.
