ELECTION RESULTS
By:
Republican Borough Council candidates Kathryn Quick and Steven Szabo scored an upset Tuesday, defeating three-term incumbents Senga Allan and Tom Weiss.
"It’s a shock that I got the majority of votes," Mr. Szabo said after learning of his victory. "I’m a newcomer, an older guy coming into politics for the first time against people who’ve been in it for 12 years."
With 55 percent of Manville’s registered voter casting ballots, the Republican challengers handily out-polled the longtime council members.
Mr. Szabo was the top pick of voters, receiving 1,425 votes, followed by Ms. Quick with 1,332.
Mr. Weiss received 1,052 votes and Ms. Allan received 1,019.
Mr. Szabo and Ms. Quick won each of Manville’s 10 voting districts.
The traditionally Democratic-voting borough leaned heavily Republican in voting this year Manville voters gave Doug Forrester the nod over Democrat Jon Corzine for governor, 1,206-1,171.
Local voters also preferred Republican incumbents Assemblymen Christopher "Kip" Bateman and Peter Biondi over Democrats Charles Eader and Michael Goldberg, and Freeholders Peter Palmer and Bob Zaborowski over James Foohey and Brian Regan.
