Victim undergoes surgery after hit-and-run on Route 1.

Doctors were trying to reattach a woman’s leg late Tuesday evening following a hit-and-run accident on Route 1.
According to police, Yelena Alter, 45, of Jersey Avenue in Monmouth Mobile Park on Route 1, was hit by a car that left the scene while she was walking on the northbound side of Route 1 at its intersection with New Road at 7:12 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
South Brunswick police spokesman Detective James Ryan said Ms. Alter was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center in New Brunswick.
He said the victim was in surgery at 11:55 p.m. where doctors tried to reattach the leg, which was found on the side of the highway. Detective Ryan said there was no update on her condition as of Wednesday evening.
Police are looking for witnesses who may have seen the accident.
Detective Ryan said investigators are searching for a 2000 to 2001 Ford Mustang. Investigators were at the scene for more than three hours investigating the incident and looking for witnesses, Detective Ryan said.
